Uncover the impact that American history has had on our national mental health.
Thomas Austin, a social worker and owner of Colorado Life Therapy, struggles with anxiety and addiction and shares his personal experience and research converged.
Over the last 10 years, Thomas has held a variety of positions working directly with youth and families involved in the child welfare system. Upon recognizing a pattern of abuse and neglect in families showing high levels of generational trauma, Thomas began work creating and implementing a team of caseworkers focused on healing these wounds and preventing further familial involvement in the system.
Thomas’ work sheds light on the diagnostic implications that misidentified trauma can have on individuals and how the collective mental health of America is being impacted by a national history laden with adversity. He hopes to bring a more compassionate, trauma-informed, approach to the way we diagnose and treat behavioral health and mental illness in America. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
On the way home you get takeout, again. At your core, you know you don’t want to keep living like this, you hate it, but you don’t see a way out.
You find yourself at work, staring at the screen, unable to get anything done. The echo of stress from your personal life drones in the background. You reach for your phone and scroll through the same three apps over and over. You want to spend time with friends, but you never seem to make it happen. Stress and anxiety build until you don’t know what to do with them. Maybe you lash out in anger, maybe you turn to substances to “take the edge off.”
Now imagine if that work stress was just work stress; if you could complete your tasks and move on with ease. You remember why you do this work to begin with. You check your phone to see if anything new, exciting, or important has happened. You’re planning something fun for this weekend. By the end of the day, you feel energized, maybe you go to the gym before heading home to cook a healthy meal. You sleep well, knowing you are in control, safe, and moving in the right direction.
While we may be powerless to change stressors, we can always change our internal reactions to them.
By working on self discovery through therapy, you will learn how to recognize and regulate your emotions, you will no longer feel at the mercy of life, but rather confident and in control of your mental state.
My goal is to build safe, therapeutic partnerships with men struggling with their mental health; to empower them to find their own version of success. As men, we have learned to stuff our feelings down and “tough it out” when things get difficult. Unfortunately, that often means numbing the pain rather than actually solving the problem. We numb ourselves through excessive work, alcohol and drug use, video games, exercise, food, or any number of other behaviors.
The problem is that these behaviors never actually resolve the issue and often lead to increased anxiety, depression, and a feeling of disconnection from ourselves and our lives. As the stress of unmanaged feelings builds, we begin to lose touch with those pieces of ourselves that make us feel whole. I am here to help you rediscover the person you were before these issues took hold.
I love the work I do and I founded Colorado Life Therapy to help other men find their way to fulfilling and enriched lives. I believe that together, we can claim a new definition of masculinity and build a future in which men no longer need to feel isolated, afraid, ashamed, or alone.
With a deep understanding that taking the first step into therapy can be challenging, I am dedicated to creating a compassionate and welcoming space where you feel safe to explore your thoughts and emotions- including those difficult ones you may wish to “get rid of” or “fix,” because even those aspects of self have something to offer. My therapeutic approach is founded on mindfulness and narrative-based principles that present opportunities to relate to sensitive stories, experiences, and emotions with compassion and curiosity, allowing for new ways to move forward.
I strive to empower adolescents in their formative years and support men in embracing vulnerability. I am committed to making therapy not only accessible but also a transformative and stigma-free experience, guiding people toward living fulfilling, balanced lives so that embracing a future defined by strength, self-awareness, and meaningful connections is possible. I look forward to embarking on the transformative experience of therapy with you and am here to walk alongside you on your path to healing.
